Care Home, Bacup
Client: N/A
Description: A partially collapsed culvert running beneath the site of the Former Bacup Health Centre led to a major civil engineering project on this town centre site. An entire section of the existing stone culvert had to be removed and the river temporarily diverted to allow the works to take place. DTM Groundworks Ltd installed a new sloping reinforced concrete bed to carry the river and then formed new in-situ reinforced concrete walls. Once complete the new culvert was capped off with prestressed concrete planks to completely enclose the river and allow new development on the site to take place. Bat boxes were installed within the completed culvert to encourage the species to nest. Downstream of the culvert replacement works, DTM Groundworks Ltd exposed and strengthened sections of the original stone culvert. All of this work was completed in just four weeks and without disruption to the river flow. Photos can be seen to the right.
